ESPO 2021

VIRTUAL

September 2020

Postponement Announcement

Dear Friends, dear Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to speak to you through this video. This allows me to reconnect with our pediatric community near and far because since January 2020, the whole planet without exception has profoundly changed its behavior. This crisis shook the world. It was brutal. We were all surprised, as this had never happened to an invisible enemy.

Faced with this exceptional situation, we were forced to cancel ESPO Marseille in May 2020, and to postpone it until February 2021. Unfortunately, the observation in the mid of this year was that the epidemic outlook varied from one country to another. As the possibilities of identifying scenarios for the near future seem a challenge, the board of ESPO has decided to adopt the strategy of profoundly modifying the calendar of its future congresses, fixing the meeting in Marseille from 6 to 9 November. 2021 and that of Liverpool in May 2023.

Marseille meeting will still be held at the Palais du Pharo over two and a half days from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning. Most of our supporters have confirmed their participation in these new dates and I sincerely thank them.

With your help, we built a high-level scientific program for May 2020. For November 2021, we together will adjust our sessions according to the latest scientific knowledge and I will contact each of you. Regarding abstracts, successful abstract submissions for 2020 will have the opportunity to be presented by their authors in 2021 (editing of the abstract will even be allowed). In addition, a new call for abstracts will be opened in spring 2021. All information will soon be available on the ESPO website.

The opportunity to speak to you in this video also allows me to officially inform you, on behalf of the ESPO Board, that we are preparing a one-day virtual event on February 20, 2021. This will be an opportunity for our community to reconnect and stay engaged and motivated while waiting to meet socially in Marseille.

May the world of tomorrow continue to be for pediatric ENTs a world of sharing ideas and genuine fraternity.

Take care of yourself and your family.

Looking forward to seeing you all in person in Marseille.

ESPO 2020 will be a “Pediatric Master Class Meeting”, with world experts, which will include multiple medical activities, including lectures, round tables, debates, how I do it, workshops and collaborative sessions with international representatives in the field. Similarly, we will ensure that a special effort be made so that free oral sessions and poster presentations can take place, giving plenty of opportunities for delegates to present their research. Simulation sessions will also have a great place in the meeting and will be open to everyone interested. Finally, instructional training courses to rethink fundamentals of our specialty will take place every morning. Simulation sessions will also have a great place in the meeting and will be open to everyone interested (small fee will apply).

We are working hard to organize the most interesting meeting possible and hope that all of you interested in pediatric otolaryngology will join us to make it a memorable event.

Do not forget to plan for some extra time in our part of the world to experience the Mediterranean spring before or after coming to us! As the congress will end on Thursday afternoon, you will have the opportunity to visit and explore Marseille and its surroundings, “La Provence”, over the following weekend.

We look forward to meeting you in Marseille.

Otology, Rhinology, Laryngology and Head & Neck Surgery are not only interconnected in this specialty, but also form links with other fields including infectiology, genetics, communication, cerebral plasticity, transitions from childhood to adulthood and also technological transitions.  These concepts form the basis of the theme of this congress: “Transfers, Bridges and Frontiers in Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology”.

The field of pediatric otorhinolaryngology has undergone incredible changes over the last decades, which have revolutionized our standard practice in the clinical and academic fields.

Transfers, Bridges and Frontiers (TBF) could summarize some of the more recent advances and challenges facing this field. It is a theme that aims to address the evolution of this specialty and how it has repeatedly overcome all difficulties and challenges with a multi-disciplinary approach.

Furthermore, themes of TBF will explore our recent successes and look at the current boundaries, links and limits.  Similarly, these themes will place our specialty in an excellent position to overcome current challenges and to discover new ones.

We look forward to meeting you in Marseille

The European Society of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology (ESPO) aims to promote the quality of care of children with otorhinolaryngology disorders within Europe and is involved in scientific, educational and charitable activities. The biennial ESPO Congress is the largest pediatric otorhinolaryngology meeting in the world, held in Europe every two years but with speakers and delegates drawn from around the globe.

The next ESPO meeting will be held in the city of Marseille from 6th to 9th November 2021 in the prestigious “Palais du Pharo”, imperial residence built in 1859 then converted into a school of medicine between 1904 and 1975, and now a convention center.

The Aix Marseille University, the Medical School of Marseille and its Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology will be the hosts of this meeting. At the present time, this department includes six full-time practitioners, two fellows and 4 residents.

The organization of this meeting is the collaborative effort of this department and the most important French ENT and pediatric societies - AFOP (French Association of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology), SFORL (French Society of Otorhinolaryngology), Collège Français d’ORL et de Chirurgie Cervico-Faciale (French Academy of ENT Head and Neck Surgery), SFP (French Society of Pediatrics).

We look forward to meeting you in Marseille.
